What do the five rings on the Olympic flag represent?
The five-ringed symbol "represents the union of the five continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceania and America) and the meeting of athletes from throughout the world at the Olympic Games." Baron Pierre de Coubertin conceived of both the symbol and the flag. Not coincidentally, Coubertin is the founder of the modern Olympic Movement. The Olympic Committee adopted the flag in 1914, and it was first flown at the 1920 Antwerp Games. The colors of the flag-- blue, black, red, yellow, and green on a white field -- are used because at least one of these colors exists in each of the flags of the nations participating in the Olympics.

Olympic Sports
The modern reincarnation of the Olympic Games was the brainchild of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, a French noble-man who sought to invigorate the young men of France with a healthy dose of athletic exercise and competition. De Coubertin's imagination was lit by the idea of a cultural, religious, and athletic festival so magnificent and so glorious that it would stimulate the youth, not only of France but of all the world, to higher ideals. In 1892, he announced in Paris that the first modern Olympiad would commence in four years. The Baron's tenacity in promoting this idea saw success in Athens in 1896, when the first Olympic Games since antiquity opened to great local fanfare (although few others in the world paid attention). |

“舞动的北京”是一座奥林匹克里程碑。它用中华民族精神镌刻、古老文明意蕴书写、华夏子孙品格铸就出的一首奥林匹克史诗中的经典华章。
The official emblem of Beijing 2008 entitled "Chinese Seal-Dancing Beijing" cleverly combines the Chinese seal and the art of calligraphy with sporting features, transforming the elements into a human figure running forward and embracing triumph. The figure resembles the Chinese character "Jing", which stands for the name of the host city and represents a particularly significant Chinese style. The artwork embodies four messages:
- Chinese culture,
- the color of red China
- Beijing welcomes friends from all over the world
- to challenge the extreme and achieve the perfect and promote the Olympic motto of "Citius, Altius, Fortius (Faster, Higher, Stronger). |
“同一个世界 同一个梦想”,集中体现了奥林匹克精神的实质和普遍价值观——团结、友谊、进步、和谐、参与和梦想,表达了全世界在奥林匹克精神的感召下,追求人类美好未来的共同愿望。使“全人类同属一个世界,全人类共同追求美好梦想”。
Theme Slogan
"One World One Dream" fully reflects the essence and the universal values of the Olympic spirit - Unity, Friendship, Progress, Harmony, Participation and Dream. It expresses the common wishes of people all over the world, inspired by the Olympic ideals, to strive for a bright future of mankind. In spite of the differences of color, language and race, we share the charm and joy of the Olympic Games, and together we seek the ideal of mankind for peace. We belong to the same world and we share the same aspirations and dreams. |

The Logo of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay owes much of its inspiration to the traditional concept of "fire phoenix", and presents the image of two runners holding the Olympic Flame high. As ancient Chinese legend has it, phoenix is the king of all birds, and symbolizes good fortune, eternity, nobility and happiness. The use of the phoenix image in the Torch Relay logo conveys the idea that the Torch Relay will send the best wishes from the Beijing Olympic Games to people all over China and the rest of the world.
