Introduction to Wenchang

文昌区位优势明显，位于海南省东北部，共有17个镇，人口59万，距省会海口市60公里，距美兰机场仅40公里；方便快捷的东环铁路途经文昌，乘坐动车至海口市需24分钟，从美兰机场搭乘到文昌仅需20分钟。

With obvious location advantage, Wenchang is located at the northeast of Hainan Province. It is composed of 17 towns with a population of 590 thousand in total, 60km away from Haikou City (provincial capital) and only 40km away from Meilan Airport; with convenient and efficient East Central Railway passing through Wenchang, it only takes 24 minutes to take the bullet train to reach Haikou City, and only 20 minutes from Meilan Airport to Wenchang.

With sea on the east, south and north, Wenchang owns the longest coastline of 278.5km in the province, with a sea area of 4,600km2. Qinglan Harbor of Wenchang is the national-level open port and Mulan Habor belongs to a natural deepwater harbor, the important hub over sea connecting with Southeastern Asia. “Two bridges and one road” under construction will activate numerous coast resources on the northeastern part of Wenchang, realizing the integration development of Wenchang and Haikou.

文昌古称紫贝县，至今已有二千多年的历史。公元627年，更名文昌县，取意“偃武修文”。1995年，撤县建市，改名文昌市。文昌人文资源深厚，被誉为“文化之乡”， “一里三进士”是文昌自古崇尚教育的真实写照。文昌是“椰子之乡”，椰林如海，有“海南椰子冠全国，文昌椰子半海南”之称。文昌椰子种植面积和产量均占海南的一半，有20多种椰子系列产品远销国内外。文昌是“排球之乡”，人民群众爱好排球，排球运动普及全市，逢年过节各村镇都要举办排球比赛，排球运动已成为文昌的一种文化，文昌中学生排球队9次荣获全国中学生排球赛冠军。文昌是“名人之乡”，自古文昌人杰地灵，名人辈出，明朝有良吏邢宥，与丘浚，海瑞齐名，近代有宋氏家族，在中国乃至世界上产生了深远的影响。文昌是“华侨之乡”，120多万海外侨胞侨居世界50多个国家和地区。文昌是“将军之乡”，在中国现代史上诞生了张云逸、陈策等200多名国共将军。文昌还被国家授予“中国长寿之乡”和“中国书法之乡”。

Wenchang, called as Zibei County in ancient times, has a history of more than two thousand years. In 627 AD, it was renamed as Wenchang County, taking the meaning of “stressing the civil arts over the military arts”. In 1995, under the background that county was removed while city was built, Wenchang County was renamed as Wenchang City. With deep humanism resources, Wenchang is honored as “Hometown of Culture”, and “three Jinshi in one li (five hundred meters)” is the reality of Wenchang advocating education since ancient times. Wenchang is the “hometown of coconut” where coconut palms are as vast as a sea, and is known for “Hainan coconut ranks the first throughout the country and Wenchang cononut accounts for half of Hainan”. Both the planting area and yield of Wenchang coconut accounts for half of that in Hainan, with more than 20 kinds of coconut series products being sold at home and abroad. Wenchang is the “hometown of volleyball”, where people are fond of volleyball and volleyball sports is popularized over the whole city; on holidays and festivals, each village and town will hold volleyball competitions and volleyball sports has become a culture of Wenchang; volleyball team of middle school student of Wenchang has ever won the champion of volleyball competition for national middle school students for 9 times. Wenchang is the “Hometown of Celebrities”. Since ancient times, Wenchang has nurtured many well-known people in the smart lands. In the Ming Dynasty, there was Xing Yu, a good official who enjoyed the equal popularity with Qiu Jun and Hai rui; in modern times, there was Song’s family that had profound influences in China and even in the world. Wenchang is the “Hometown of Overseas Chinese” where there are more than 1200,000 overseas Chinese living in more than 50 countries and regions. Wenchang is the “Hometown of Generals” where more than 200 generals of CPC and KMT, such as Zhang Yunyi and Chen ce, were born in the contemporary history of China. Besides, Wenchang has been awarded by our country with “Hometown of Longevity in China” and “Hometown of Chinese Calligraphy”.

文昌自然资源丰富，拥有已探明的18种矿产资源和丰富的热带作物资源；境内盛产椰子、橡胶等热带作物，椰子总量占全省近一半，资源型加工业发展较快。海域范围内拥有大小岛屿43个，自然港湾36个，滩涂面积6382公顷，海产品有800多种，开发价值和效益潜力巨大。文昌滨海风光旖旎，人文景观独特，名胜古迹众多，生态环境良好，而且有珍奇海鲜、美食佳肴，尤其海南传统四大名菜之首的文昌鸡，驰名中外。文昌还地处热带北缘，属热带海洋季风气候区，常年平均气温23.9度，终年无霜，四季常绿，实乃避寒避暑之胜地，回归自然之佳境。

Wenchang has abundant natural resources and owns 18 explored mineral resources and abundant tropical crop resources; within the area, tropical crops such as coconut and rubber are rich and the total amount of coconut accounts for about half of that in whole province, besides, resource-oriented processing industry is developing rapidly. Within the sea area, there are 43 big and small islands, 36 natural harbors and 6382 hectares of beach area as well as over 800 kinds of marine products, thus showing great development value and benefit potential. Wenchang has a charming coastal scenery, unique cultural landscape, numerous places of interest and good ecological environment. Besides, there are rare seafood, gourmet and delicacies, especially for Wenchang chicken with the first rank among big four traditional famous dishes of Hainan, it is world famous. Apart from these, Wenchang is located at tropic north edge, belongs to tropical marine monsoon climate zone, where the average temperature is 23.9° all year around with no frost, plants are green in four seasons, actually becoming the resort for preventing coldness and heat and the wonderful place for returning to nature.  

文昌具有丰富的旅游特色资源，278.5公里的海岸线，处处景色迷人。有“椰林长城”之称、椰风海韵醉游人的东郊椰林湾；有“琼东第一峰”、“奇峰秀天下”之称的铜鼓岭；有被誉为“稀世的海上森林公园”的八门湾红树林风景区；有幽邃迷人的石头公园；有光怪陆离的冯家湾海底世界；有千姿百态、色彩斑斓的云龙湾大保礁；有蓬莱仙境般的七洲列岛；有全国棕榈科植物品种最齐全的椰子大观园。此外，文昌还有举世闻名的宋氏祖居、被誉为“海南第一庙”的文昌孔庙、被誉为“亚洲第一灯塔”的木兰灯塔、古色古香的溪北书院、历史悠久的七星岭斗柄塔等胜景。文昌乡村生态良好，绿树环抱，环境优美，全市63%以上自然村建成了文明生态村。文明生态村“农家乐”等景区、景点也备受游客青睐。

Wenchang has abundant characteristic tourism resources, a coastline of 578.5km, and charming sceneries everywhere, including Yelinwan of eastern suburbs called as “the Great Wall of Coconut Palms” and with coconut wind and rhythmic sea fascinating visitors, Tongguling known as “the First Peak of East Hainan” and “World-famous Unique Peak”, Bamenwan Mangrove Scenic Spot that is honored as “Rare Forest Park over the Sea”, deep and quite Stone Park, bizarre Fengjiawan Underwater World, Yulongwan Dabao Reef with various poses and colors, Qizhou Islets like a Penglai Fairyland and Coconut Showplace with the most complete varieties of national palm plants. Wenchang also owns the well-known ancestral home of Song’s family, Wenchang Temple of Confucius honored as “the No. 1 Temple in Hainan”, Mulan Lighthouse honored as “the No. 1 Lighthouse in Asia”, antique Xibei Academy and Qixingling Doubing Tower with a long history. Wenchang villages have good ecology, green trees surrounded and beautiful trees, and more than 63% of natural villages in the city have been built as civilized and ecological villages, where “agritainment” and other scenic spots are also rather popular with visitors.

On June 25, 2016, Long March 7 was firstly launched successfully in Wenchang Satellite Launch Center, the fourth biggest space launch center of China, attracting worldwide attention and more than 150 thousand visitors watched the first launch of rocket on the site. Wenchang Satellite Launch Center bears the important task of Chang’e Project and it can meet the requirements for launching tasks of new non-toxic and non-pollution carrier rocket and new spacecraft, besides, it is a new open launching site facing international trading market and provided with tour & sightseeing function.

With the radiation leading of space economy, a large number of major projects are determined here successively. Tongguling International Eco-tourism Project created by Luneng Group and Shenzhen Hualong Company is in emerging construction; 6 nationwide top-ten enterprises, such as Shimao, Agile Property and KWG. have gathered at 7km coastline of Yueliangwan starting area, and they are joining efforts to create the top resort of international tourism island; Bamenwan greenway with Wenchang characteristics is one big brand of rural tourism in Wenchang City. Relying on the resource of near 30,000 mu of Bamenwan mangrove wetland, Bamenwan greenway is the first choice of nationwide mangrove landscape tourism, based on which we will take the opportunity of Bamenwan Greenway opening to planning and construct national 5A wetland park of Bamenwan Mangrove at high standards. Space Town in Longlou, Elegant Town in Gaolongwan, Coconut Customs Town of eastern suburbs, Internet Town in Huiwen and other characteristic towns are now under construction.

Wenchang City is famous and unique for its characteristic tourism resources represented by space, culture, coconut palms and hometown of overseas Chinese in the province and even in the country. The tourism layout of “One Belt and Two Parks, Seven Towns and Four Groups” will construct the big structure of future tourism development. According to the requirements of Wenchang City for tourism reception service during the first launching of rocket in 2016, the first step is to accelerate the introduction of famous management enterprises at home and abroad to form high-end tourism service market as soon as possible, and now, Luneng Hilton Hotel has officially opened to welcome domestic and overseas tourists, and many five-star hotels of international famous brands under construction will open to welcome tourists before the first launching of rockets in 2016. The second step is to actively develop new high-end tourism items, such as theme hotels, leisure clubs and yacht wharfs. The third step is to increase tourist attractions under development and create supporting items, such as “agritainment” and beautiful village, to expand reception capacity of tourist attractions. The fourth step is to accelerate the introduction of hypermarkets and malls to improve the level of supporting facilities for tourism.

The infrastructure of Wenchang has been constantly improved. East Central Railway, Haiwen Express, Wenchang-Boao Express and “Two Bridges and One Road” under construction all constitute the big loop-back traffic artery of Wenchang.
