[Changing from scientist to entrepreneur to exploit commercial value from public data]

柳超，北京大学计算机系本科，美国伊利诺伊大学香槟分校计算机专业博士是典型的数据科班出身，曾任美国国家自然科学基金数据挖掘方向的评审专家。2008年加入美国微软研究院，主管数据智能团队，聚焦在信息检索、数据挖掘和机器学习等诸多大数据相关领域，出版了 3 本英文专著、5篇国际期刊文章，以及30余篇国际一流学术会议文章 ，1300+次独立引用。2009年他与几位学者一起发表了重量级论文BBM: Bayesian Browsing Model from Petabyte-scale Data（《基于PB级数据的贝叶斯浏览模型》），是国际上最早研究PB级数据挖掘的学者之一。2012年回国加入腾讯，领导“腾讯搜索”的相关数据挖掘与机器学习业务。2013年，柳超博士入选国家青年“千人计划”专家行列，目前，他也是北京市海外高层次人才暨“海聚计划”专家、北京市特聘专家、国家下一代互联网产业技术创新联盟专家，。柳超一直活跃在学术界和工业界。在这么多丰富且让人仰视的经历和成就外，他再次为自己的人生加上了浓墨重彩的一笔：天眼查CEO的职位。和很多计算机领域的科学家一样，柳超文质彬彬，聪明富有逻辑，但不同的是，在他身上还有更多的敏锐和深邃。

Liu Chao, graduated from the Department of Computer Science, Peking University as a bachelor and from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as a doctor majoring in computing, has a typical data related educational background. He once acted as an appraisal expert of data mining in the US National Science Foundation, and joined Microsoft Research in the United States in 2008, where he was in charge of a data intelligence team focusing on big data related sectors such as information retrieval, data mining and machine learning. He has published 3 English monographs, 5 papers in international journals, and presented more than 30 articles at high level international academic conferences, which have been cited separately more than 1,300 times. In 2009, he published an important article entitled “BBM: Bayesian Browsing Model from Petabyte-scale Data” together with his partners, making him one of the first batch of scholars studying petabyte-scale data mining in the world. In 2012, he came back to China and joined Tencent, where he led a team focusing on data mining and machine learning for “Tencent Search”. In 2013, he was elected as an expert of the national “Thousand Talents Program” (also called “Recruitment Program of Global Experts”). At present, he is also an overseas top talent of Beijing, an expert of “Overseas Talents Gathering Program”, a specially invited expert of Beijing, and an expert of Next Generation Internet Union. Liu Chao is always active in both academic and industrial circles. In addition to such rich and admirable experience and achievements he has another remarkable title as CEO of TianYanCha. Like many scientists in the field of computing, Liu Chao is gentle, smart and logical. Besides this, he exhibits high levels of acuity and profundity.

天眼查最初的想法源于柳超美国研究期间的一个学术项目，通过研究techcrunch的投资关系来预测哪些企业能够获得投资，有些预测还是非常准确的。后来他根据这个案例写成了一篇论文，美国《商业周刊》评论并转载了这篇论文，这让他看到了商业关系的巨大价值空间。

The idea of TianYancha originally came from an academic project of Liu Chao during his research in the United States. That project forecasted which enterprises may obtain investment by studying Techcrunch’s investment relations; some of the forecasts were very accurate. Later, he wrote a paper based on that project, which was commented on and republished by the famous US periodical Business Week. He saw the huge potential value of commercial relations from this case.
