Royole: A Model of Technological Entrepreneurship Royole Corporation, founded simultaneously in 2012 in Silicon Valley in the USA, Shenzhen China, and Hong Kong, is mainly engaged in development, production and sale of flexible displays, flexible sensors, VR display and related smart devices. In August 2014, it introduced the worlds’ thinnest full-color flexible display with a thickness of 0.01mm and a bending radius of 1mm, which can be directly used for smart phones. [1]。 Application of flexible displays can greatly improve the convenience of smart phones. In the near future, cell phones can be drawn out from a pen, or embedded in flexible clothes, or wound freely on the wrist. People will even be able to travel with televisions, which, use the innovative flexible display, are very light and can be rolled up like a picture [1]. Origin: scientific and technological conception under the integration of Chinese and western cultures The founder of Royole, currently chairman and CEO, is Dr. Liu Zihong, an overseas returnee from Stanford University. Born in 1983, this young chairman has a growth experience with the accolade of “genius”: in the college entrance exam when he was 17 years old he was the top scorer of Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province, received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering in Tsinghua University when he was 21 and received a master degree at the age of 23; later he studied at Stanford University in the Department of Electronic Engineering and received his doctoral degree at the age of 26 to become the first Chinese graduate in this department to obtain his doctoral degree in less than three years [2]; he worked as advisory engineer and research scientist in the Global R&D Center of IBM from 2009 to 2012 and in 2012 founded Royole Corporation simultaneously in Silicon Valley in the USA, Shenzhen China, and Hong Kong, when he was still less under 30 years old. During his study in Tsinghua University, Liu Zihong showed his technological talents and endless pursuit of advanced technologies. The “human body biological sensor chip” developed by him won Special Prize and national champion in the National Challenge Cup scientific and technological contest of college students; with his partners in 2002, he developed an “indoor motion simulation system”, which was a supporting technology for motion sensing games significantly earlier than the launch time (2006) of motion sensing games such as Xbox. In addition to acquiring technological knowledge, the school motto of Tsinghua University, “actions speak louder than words”, had a deep influence on Liu Zihong during his six years of study there. Now Liu still uses this motto as a requirement for himself and his employees. “When you are innovating in source technology, you must be very precise and you can persuade others only with your products.” The motto of Stanford University is “the wind of freedom blows”, and Liu Zihong heard many stories of predecessors who were intelligent and hard-working and who could see the possibilities of starting a high-tech enterprise from zero. “Many companies born here, such as Google, Tesla, Yahoo, HP and Cisco, have realized a market value of tens, even hundreds of billions US dollars. The founders of these companies lived within this circle and they were also common students at the beginning,” said Liu Zihong. He said that Stanford often invited alumni to give lectures and this was very exciting. “In that environment, I truly felt that dreams could come true.” He often lay on the lawn in the campus, thinking about the future. “I hope to do something to influence more people in future.”
