About “Hair”

《发》，这是一组中国人头发颜色的照片。中国人原本的发色为黑色。现在中国人以染金发为时尚。男女老少，平民精英，大多以染成欧美人的发色为美。这样一种流行时尚，遍及城市与乡村。

“Hair” is a group of photos about the colors of Chinese hair. The original hair color of Chinese people is black. Nowadays, however, the Chinese tend to dye their hair blonde. Men and women of different ages and different levels tend to consider the European and American hair colors beautiful. Such a fashion has spread over cities and countryside.

头发被很多人当作脸一样看待，尤其是女子。欧·亨利《麦琪的礼物》中穷困的德拉凭秀发像“褐色的瀑布”而自豪。现在中国人也以一头金发为自豪。

Hair is treated as valuable as the face by many people, especially women. In O. Henry’s book The Gift of the Magi, impoverished Della is proud of her hair because it is as beautiful as the “brown waterfall”. Now the Chinese are also proud to have blond hair.

头发，看似不起眼的身体部份，在中国人传统中，其实是很重要的一个部份。自古中国人认为，身体发肤，受自父母，很珍重，是不能随意改变的大事情。中国历史上，改朝换代的时候，曾经发生留发不留头，留头不留发的惨烈事情。新的统治者以改变头发的方式企图从思想上心理上征服人民。

Hair, seemingly an inconspicuous body part, however, in the Chinese tradition, is actually a very important one. Since ancient times, Chinese people have kept believing that body, hair and skin are a treasure because they are given by one’s parents and are thus not to be changed at ease. In the Chinese history, dynastic changes might lead to such tragic events as “leaving the head without leaving the hair or vice versa”, which means if you want to keep your hair, you’ll be beheaded, and you’ll have to shave if you want to live. The new rulers attempted to conquer the people mentally by changing their hair.

现在中国人把自己如此看重的头发，把它与生俱来的黑发染成欧美人的发色，这样一个当下的时尚，从某个侧面可经映射出我们现在正处在一个剧烈大变动的时代，所谓三千年未有之大变局。

Today, the Chinese, who once valued their hair so much, tend to dye their inherent dark hair into European and American hair colors, which indicates that we are in an era of drastic change, the so-called “Fundamental Change in the Past Three Thousand Years”.

Fashion is never a sheer matter of visual aesthetics. It is the refraction and reflection of social and political relations herein. Why is it a trend to consider European and American hair colors (e.g. blond, brown, etc.) beautiful? It actually does not correspond to the biological features of our yellow race. And it should arouse our thinking. There are actually a very complex social and cultural factors behind it. In this post-colonial era, this might indicate the Chinese people’s non-confidence, sense of inferiority, blindness, flirtatiousness ... John Berger mentioned in his article “Suits and Photos” that under the lens of Sander, suits became a kind of defects on German farmers. The essence of modern trend and fashion is actually a game of capital. The cultural pluralism advocated today tends to be largely eliminated in the cultural forms accompanying with strong capital.
